Statistical-mechanical approach to performance evaluation of CDMA communications

We describe an approach, based on statistical physics, to a problem of analytically evaluating performance of CDMA channel models. After mentioning mathematical relation of CDMA channel model to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel models and the perceptrons, we elucidate the problem of evaluating mutual information between sent information symbols and received signals in a CDMA channel model with generic channel noise. Under the assumptions of random signatures and large-system limit, we apply the replica method, which has been developed in the literature of statistical physics, to derive a general result that provides an analytical expression for the mutual information. We further discuss Guo and Verdu's result, which is also derived by particularizing the general result obtained in this paper to the case of additive Gaussian channel noise. In the appendix, we provide a detailed description of the replica method applied to the problem of evaluating the mutual information of the CDMA channel model. |
