Interpolation by Multiple Generators and Its Applications
Koichi Ichige (Yokohama National Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Standard linear interpolation is still worth due to its low computational complexity, even though the inherent problem of the linear interpolation is the quality of interpolated signals and images. One may seek high quality interpolation algorithms which involve large computational cost. The other movement would be more important, for realtime multimedia signal processing as an example, to find low-cost interpolation algorithm of which the quality could be achieved as high as possible. As low-cost and high-quality interpolation algorithms, Shifted-linear interpolation and Multiple FIR Interpolation have been already proposed. Shifted Linear often sharpen edges of images but sometimes the sharpness affect to image quality in undesired way. Multiple FIR interpolation may reduce such undesired sharpness but the quality of interpolated images are usually less than that of Shifted-linear. In this report, Shifted-linear and Multiple FIR interpolation are modified with offset terms. The new basis functions would be first introduced, and then their effectiveness will be evaluated in comparison of those conventional algorithms.
