Preliminary results are presented on the relation between the forest biomass and the order parameter of the K-distribution in the high-resolution polarimetric SAR (synthetic aperture radar) images. The analysis is based on the airborne Pi-SAR data acquired in November 2002 over the Tomakomai forests in Hokkaido, Japan. It is found that, among the Rayleigh, log-normal, K and Weibull distributions, the K-distribution fits best to the L-band amplitude images of the forests, and that there is a strong correlation between the tree biomass and the order parameter of the K-distribution in the cross-polarization images. A remarkable feature of this result is that the order parameter increases with biomass to approximately 100 tons/ha or above which is well beyond the saturation limits of the radar cross section (approximately 40 tons/ha for L-band RCS). |
