Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper presents a method to remove background color, texture and grain of a wooden tablet and extract handwritten characters written by a brush in black Indian ink. Smoothing removes texture and decreases its effect on handwriting extraction. Since background color of a wooden tablet has red and yellow components, color reduction, color removing and color mapping are useful to decrease its effect on handwriting extraction. After applying these processes, binalization using the discriminant threshold selection method extracts handwritten characters from the background.
