Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In order to establish a noninvasive and quantitative measurement of swallowing function, we have been developing a larynx-motion measurement system SFN-1, employing a pressure-sensor array. But the system has three dominant defects as follows: 1) being applicable solely to male subjects; 2) interference with natural swallowing due to pressurized anterior triangle; and 3) a low spatial resolution. In order to eliminate such defects, we updated the sensing devise into an array of twelve photo-reflectors in this study. Since a photo-reflector can detect the distance from it to the skin surface, the devise can measure the contour of a vertical cross-section of the skin surface in front of the larynx non-invasively, with a relatively high spatial-resolution. In order to evaluate its detection performance, we experimentally obtained measurement accuracy of the contour and the moving distance of a process. Additionally we measured subject’s larynx motion during actual swallowing. Consequently, the spatial resolution in the contour measurement was significantly improved from 8mm into 0.6mm, and the larynx motion was proved to be detectable. Thus the updated sensor could measure the thyroid motion during swallowing with a sufficient accuracy, suggesting its clinical applicability to the evaluation of swallowing function.
