Study on reducing the Rayleigh scattering loss in optical fibers

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The Rayleigh scattering which is dominant origin of optical loss in silica fibers is caused by density fluctuation and composition fluctuation. The density fluctuation is dependent on the temperature (Tf: fictive temperature) at which glass structure is the same as that of the supercooled liquid state. The fiber under drawing was annealed and Tf was controlled using annealing time and annealing temperature. When Tf was 1340 deg., the Rayleigh scattering coefficient was 0.86dB/km/nm4. That value is lower than conventional fibers 8%. The optical loss of this fiber is confirmed with 0.299dB/km at 1.31㎛ and 0.170dB/km at 1.57㎛ respectively.
