In traffic engineering so as to distribute traffic, on the basis of traffic flows, over multiple paths, taking into account traffic characteristics for individual flow is vital in allocating flows to paths to guarantee the QoS of traffic. All flows allocated to a path, in which heavily bursty traffic is accommodated, experience a significant delay deviation when the path is highly utilized. In order to lowering queuing delay incurred to multiplexed flows which share a path, we analyze the mean, variance, and 99.5th percentile of queuing delays of multiplexed flows having different traffic characteristics using an infinite buffer model accommodating on-off fluid flows. And we study a distribution method for flows grouped into two classes over two paths using the results of these queuing delays. As a result of the analyses, we present that trivial methods for flow distribution, such as equalizing utilization of paths or separating flows depending on traffic characteristics, do not alway lower the queuing delay and that the flows should be distributed based on their traffic characteristics, the number of flows, and the path bandwidths, in particular, when the path bandwidths are different. |
