Beam-Switching Circular Dielectric-Rod Antenna using Periodic Metal Ring

This paper describes a millimeter-wave beam-switching circular dielectric-rod antenna that uses a moveable periodic metal ring which can be loaded over the dielectric rod. This antenna can easily switch between a conical beam pattern in the endfire direction and an ominidirectional radiation pattern in the azimuth plane by changing its behavior between a surface-wave antenna and a leaky-wave antenna. Measurement results indicate that good radiation characteristics are maintained across the 54-56 GHz range and are in good agreement with the simulated ones. We also studied a way to suppress the sidelobes due to the radiation of the remaining power from the end of the dielectric rod leaky-wave antenna. It was evident that a metal reflector at the end of the rod can decrease the sidelobe levels, resulting in a reduction of the antenna length. |
