OFDM Packet Transmission using Soft Decision-directed Channel Estimation with Highly Efficient Pilot Symbol

(in English) To realize highly efficient OFDM packet transmission in mobile communications, this report proposes both a transmission scheme with a pilot symbol having much less pilot subcarriers and a channel estimation method using such a pilot symbol. Generally, coherent detection for the OFDM packet transmission requires accurate estimation of channel frequency responses and then needs pilot subcarriers allocated to all subcarriers, which remarkably degrades transmission efficiency of short packets. To improve the transmission efficiency, the proposed scheme uses only one pilot symbol for channel estimation, which contains regularly spaced pilot subcarriers and data subcarriers. Furthermore, the proposed receiver carries out soft decision-directed channel estimation (SDCE) and iterates the reception processing which consists of the channel estimation, the coherent detection, and channel decoding, in order to perform the accurate channel estimation even with much less pilot subcarriers. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve almost the same accuracy of the channel estimation and transmission performance as those of a conventional one at the cost of much less pilot subcarriers.
