The response to the bursting pattern stimulation of granule cells in the rat hippocampal dentate gyrus
Kiiko Kumagai, Satoru Ishizuka (KIT)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Entorhinal cortex layer II projects to the dentate gyrus(DG) of the hippocampus through the perforant path(PP). When stimulus is applied to PP, DG granule cells fire easier for stimulation of 8-10Hz than stimulation of 0.2-0.5Hz, and above 10Hz stimulation inhibits firing. In other word, the DG works as a band-pass filter for theta rhythm. In this study, we recorded the field action potential of DG granule cells responded to PP stimulation in the rat hippocampal slices, identified frequency characteristic of DG granule cells, and then, compared difference between bursting and beating pattern stimulation in case the average frequencies were 2Hz and 15Hz.The experimental results indicated that granule cells respond to bursting pattern stimulation easier than beating one at 2Hz.
