Same-Beam Differential VLBI Technology Using Two Satellites of the SELENE Spacecraft

(in English) The Japanese SELENE project consists of a main satellite with a low altitude of 100 km, a relay sub-satellite (Rstar) and a VLBI sub-satellite (Vstar) with high altitudes. The high-degree gravity fields in the far side detected by the main satellite will be directly obtained from 4-way Doppler observation via Rstar. Thus, the orbit of Rstar has to be determined precisely. In addition, for precisely estimating the low-degree gravity fields detected by the two sub-satellites, their orbits have to be determined by using differential VLBI. Rstar and Vstar only emit three S-band carriers within a bandwidth of 75 MHz and one carrier in X-band, and the difference in delay time will be obtained with an accuracy of several ps from the relation between correlation phase and frequency of four carriers. In this case, the difference in correlation phase at each frequency has to be estimated without 2π ambiguity. In this paper, we report that when the two sub-satellites enter into the same-beam of antenna, they can be observed simultaneously. In this case, the propagation delay and instrumental delay can be nearly canceled, and the difference in delay time can be obtained with an accuracy of several ps from the correlation phases without 2π ambiguity, and then the relative position between Rstar and Vstar can be determined with a very high accuracy of tens cm.
