Biplane 2-D/3-D Rigid Registration Using Commodity Graphics Hardware

(in English) One challenging issue in 2-D/3-D rigid registration is to achieve shorter computation time. To solve this issue, this paper presents an acceleration method using GPU (graphics processing unit) equipped on a PC graphics card. The GPU is currently faster than the CPU. It is also easier to use as compared with the PC cluster. Moreover, the GPU is suitable for the problem of 2-D/3-D registration, which can be resolved into a drawing problem. Our method accelerates three key procedures in registration by implementing them on the GPU: volume projection, neighbor filtering, and reduction operation. We apply our method to biplane registration to improve the accuracy of registration. The experimental results show that our GPU-based method completes a registration task in about 10 seconds, while a CPU-based method takes more than 10 minutes. Furthermore, most tasks are successfully aligned if the initial registration error is less than 10 mm.
