Forecasting Daily Peak Traffic Variation with Neural Network -- A Proposal of the Method and its Evaluation --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper proposes a method for forecasting daily peak traffic variation with neural network, and investigates its practicality with actual daily traffic data. Forecasting future traffic variation is one of the crucial tasks for conducting communications network design and/or optimization. Historically, conventional time-series forecasting methods have been used for forecasting average traffic variation. For certain network planning or optimization issues, however, forecasting peak traffic variation, rather than the average, becomes more beneficial. To tackle this mission, a neural network forecasting model is constructed while weighting forecasting errors around peaks. The evaluation with actual daily traffic data demonstrates the performance of the proposed method.
