As an energy-saving scheme for LAN switches, it is common policy that each interface of their switches is kept on while there are some packets for transmission in its buffer whereas its state changes into idle state, which is relatively low power mode, immediately after the buffer becomes empty. However, this policy can damage its hardware in terms of power supply device since the number of turning-on times becomes large although the energy-saving rate may be large. For relieving this issue, we can adopt the alternative policy that interfaces further turn on during some standby time even if their packet transfer has completed. However, the energy-saving effect of LAN switches with these policies may not been evaluated analytically and quantitatively well. Therefore, in this paper, we derive the power reduction rate and the average number of turning-on times as performance measures by modifying M/M/1 and IPP/M/1 queueing models, and investigate the impact of the standby time on the energy-saving effect through some numerical results. |
