40 Gbit/s (4x10 Gbit/s) -3 km WDM transmission using 850 nm VCSEL, AWG, and PCF

(in English) Recently, a photonic crystal fiber (PCF), which has a core region surrounded by multiple air holes, has received a lot of attention because of its new characteristics such as endlessly single-mode operation and arbitrary dispersion control. By combining a VCSEL, a Si-APD, and a PCF we can construct inexpensive and high-speed communication systems such as 10-40 Gbit/s Ethernet. In this paper, we report the first 10 Gbit/s x 4 channel WDM transmission over 3 km at 850 nm using a single-mode PCF without power penalty. We used a special arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) operating at 850 nm as a multiplexer and a demultiplexer.
