Streaming Rate Control Mechanism Considering Handoff Operation in RTP/RTCP Communication

(in English) Multimedia streaming services are becoming popular mainly in wired network. The wide bandwidth of next-generation mobile networks will facilitate the provision of streaming services in mobile environments. In such case, users may perform handoff between different base stations with different available bandwidths. In RTP/RTCP streaming rate control mechanism, when a user receives stream and performs handoff, the sender cannot immediately adjust its streaming rate to the new network after handoff. This degrades the quality of streaming contents. We therefore have proposed a scheme that enables senders to probe available bandwidth in the new network using low-priority packets and to adjust its rate after handoff. In this paper, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through further simulations.
