Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We investigated the influences of average luminance level (ALL) of display image, screen illuminance, and viewers age on the preferred luminance of LCDs. The 20 young subjects (mean age: 21.8) and 24 old subjects (mean age: 68.9) adjusted the luminance of the 17-inch 1000:1 LCD monitor to preferred level under different experimental conditions. The results indicate that the preferred luminance of the peak white (Lp) was described as following formula: Lp = k × ALL^α . Where k is a constant, ALL is an average luminance level of display image, and α is a constant 0.19-0.20 for aged users and 0.14-0.17 for young users. Influences of viewers age and screen illuminance on the luminance requirements for LCDs were discussed. These results are applicable to luminance control system for LCDs.
