A study for improving performance of thin client traffic

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Thin-client system is a system in which a client transmits a user event such as a mouse or keyboard input to a server and the server returns screen updates of the user interface of an applications to the client. Network traffic in a thin-client system, that is, thin client traffic, is classified into two categories; interactive traffic and bulk transfer traffic. The interactive traffic mainly transfers character information caused by a user event. The bulk transfer traffic transfers screen update information outputted by the server. We introduce a technique of sending a duplicate data packet in order to recover from packet loss quickly for the interactive traffic. We also examine TCP without slow-start restart (SSR) and TCP resegmentation in order to improving the throughput of the bulk transfer traffic. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed technique through the traffic simulation using the real field data. We show that the technique of sending a duplicate data packet increases the tolerance for random packet drops over a link. We also indicate that the TCP without SSR increases the burstiness of the bulk transfer traffic and the resegmentation reduces the impact of its burstiness.
