Adaptable Scaffolding and Fading for Developing Reflection Skill of Navigational Learning in Hyperspace

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Self-directed learning requires learners not only to learn material but also to monitor and control the learning processes, which is viewed as meta-cognitive activity. Although meta-cognition plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of learning, it is not so easy for learners to accomplish it concurrently with learning the material. This paper addresses the issue of how to develop meta-cognitive skill with a cognitive tool that scaffolds the meta-cognitive activity. Our approach to this issue is to follow cognitive apprenticeship to scaffold reflection of navigational learning in hyperspace with fadable functions of the tool. This paper demonstrates fadable scaffolding with Interactive History (IH for short) helping learners reifying reflection activity.
