An Efficient 3D Video Compression Method Based on Global Geometric Structures

(in English) 3D video is a new image media which records whole information of a target object; that is, its shape, motion, color, and texture. Although it has potential applicability which innovates our everyday life, there are many open issues to obtain, handle and utilize 3D video. We, in this report, focus on the compression of 3D video. Among various proposed methods, a compression technique called skin-off first cuts 3D shape and map all 3D video data onto a 2D planar screen. This operation enables us to apply conventional 2D video codec for 3D video compression, and raise practical usability. However, because current skin-off operation takes only local information, i.e. shape and texture, into consideration, the operation is not always optimal. To cope with this issue, we propose a new technique which analyze global geometric structures of given 3D video data using its skeleton model, and obtain appropriate paths to cut open the 3D mesh in view of compression efficiency.
