Strongly guiding waveguides stacked laterally and their application to a polarization converter

(in English) The full-vectorial beam-propagation method is used to assess the coupling characteristics between strongly guiding waveguides stacked laterally. The reason for the polarization conversion is explained using the eigenmode and beam propagation analysis. Almost complete conversion can be obtained, when the longitudinal spacing between the waveguides is appropriately chosen. Another coupler composed of two rectangular cores is also studied to realize the polarization conversion without exchanging the power with the same polarization.
