Improvement of Beam Scanning Characteristics of a Dielectric Lens Antenna by Array Feeds

(in English) In ITS services, antennas are required beam scanning abilities. Authors designed a lens antenna that could achieve beam scanning over ±30°. The narrow beam widths were maintained on the scanning plane. However, the beam widths were broadened on the transverse planes and the sharp gains reduces were occurred.
In this paper, array feeds composed of a group of rectangular horns is proposed to improve beam scanning characteristics. In order to calculate excitation coefficients of the array feeds, a new radiation pattern synthesis method is developed. At the beam scanning angle of 30°, the beam shape on the transverse plane is improved to almost same as the beam on the scanning plane and the increase of antenna gain by 1.9dB is achieved. And the validity of the radiation pattern synthesis is clarified by the calculation on EM simulator.
