Simulation analyses on the neuronal responses to extracellular electrical stimulations -- Effects of stimulation pulse waveforms --

(in English) For neural diseases, clinical trials of the treatments/prostheses with the functional electric stimulation have been widely performed in recent years. In those cases, it is critical to use the minimum amounts of current/charge to stimulate the target neurons, in order to guarantee their safety. In this study, we made computer simulations using biophysics models of neurons, to analyze quantitatively how the threshold current/charge for eliciting neuronal excitation can be altered when different parameters of the pulse waveform were applied as the stimuli. As has been shown in our previous studies on retinal ganglion cells, the present simulations showed that the amounts of current/charge required for evoking spike firings of the model cells can be reduced by optimally adjusting the parameters of stimulation pulse waveforms.
