A study on an improved method for bronchoscope tracking using an electromagnetic tracker without fiducial markers

(in English) This paper proposes an improved method for tracking the position and orientation of a bronchoscope without fiducial markers by using an ultra-tiny electromagnetic tracker. In the last year, we proposed the method for tracking bronchoscope without fiducial markers by matching the outputs of the tracker and bronchi regions extracted from the CT image. However, the accuracy of the transformation matrix heavily depended on the number of branches the bronchoscope utilized, since an output from the magnetic sensor close to branching points may correspond to a few branches. To improve the accuracy of the transformation matrix, the new method proposes the stable branch selection procedure that uses view directions of the bronchoscope and running directions of bronchial branches. We applied the proposed method to a rubber bronchial model. Experimental results showed that the registration error of the proposed method was about 2.0 mm in average, and the proposed method could estimate the transformation matrix more accurately and quickly than the previous method.
