In orofacial surgery in general, and especially in cleft lip and palate surgery, creating a harmonious facial form is very important. Therefore, proposing automated algorithms for analysis of facial images based on facial features may assist surgeons in surgical planning and in the evaluation of surgical outcome. However, recently, most researches for evaluation of cleft lip have mainly been performed by two dimensional analyzing of photographs. In this paper, we attempt to develop automatic procedures for facial feature extraction and 3D face modeling using facial color images from different views taken by calibrated stereo images to analysis of cleft lip and palate surgery. The main processing steps include design of a new calibrated camera system, acquiring color images from at least two views, automatic facial skin and feature extraction, 3D stereo computation, 3D face modeling. For this purpose, we have developed a calibrated camera system in the Oral and Maxillofacial Functional Rehabilitation division of the Ryukyus Hospital to take images from patients with cleft lip and palate. |
