[Special Talk] Mathematical Approach to Vision Science
Seiichiro Naito (Tokai Univ.) PRMU2007-224
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, a mathematical approach to vision system which includes visual illusions mechanisms is proposed. The basic visual functions are well investigated based on the neurophysiological knowledge, however, the high level functions such as shape perceptions have not yet been fully clarified. Illusions give helpful cues to the shape perceptions. Mathematically, the metric tensor fixes the whole geometrical properties. Illusions should also be determined by the metric tensor. Illusion figures have different dimensions such as filled or unfilled figures. Depending on the dimensions, the magnitude of illusion changes. The mathematical symmetry of fits very well to the issue.
