A design method for polarization controllers based on photonic crystal fibers infiltrated with liquid crystals

(in English) In this paper, we propose a novel type of temperature-controlled polarization controller based on photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) filled with liquid crystals. Firstly, the effect of air hole diameter changes on hybridness is investigated using full-vectorial finite element method, where hybridness is a key parameter to understand the polarization conversion properties. By evaluating the temperature dependence on not only hybridness but also half-beat length, the optimum structures for the PCF-based polarization controller are determined. In addition, by employing full-vectorial finite element beam propagation method, we numerically confirm that the highly efficient temperature-controlled polarization controller based on PCFs can be realized.
