Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) systems are capable of increasing the transmission capacity of the optical fiber communication system. Specially with the rapid development of WDM technology, high-speed OTDM techniques are becoming increasingly important for handling ultrashort pulse trains for high-speed signal processing. To realize the high-speed OTDM system, it is important to develop stable ultra-short pulse sources capable of
providing high quality optical pulses. Also, pulse width tunable optical pulse source is becoming more important, for a example at the time when pulses with different repetition rates need optical pulses with different pulse widths.
Here in this work, we generate ultrashort optical pulses by pulse compression using Raman amplifier. There are so many researches on optical pulse compression in a Raman gain medium in the recent past. But in this work mainly we focus on the evaluation of the characteristic features of the pulse compression process.
First of all, we carry out the experiments to generate ultrashort pulses in the 17 km Dispersion Shifted Fiber (DSF) with Raman amplifier using pulses from electro-absorption modulator (EAM). At the beginning it is necessary to compensate the chirping occurred in EAM. Then we measure the Raman gain dependence of the output pulse width in order to show that the pulse width tunable pulse source is possible through this pulse compression process. Also it is required to evaluate the quality of the output compressed pulses. Finally we describe about the experiments how we evaluate the characteristic performance of the pulse compression process.
