Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper presents a framework for granular noise reduction using Graph Cuts. Graph-cut algorithm is a discrete optimization method, which is widely used for noise reduction, image segmentation, image stitching, and so on. This algorithm can also be applied to reducing the granular noise, which is essentially the non-uniform photo-sensor sensitivity enhanced by amplification of dark image signal. However, standard graph-cut algorithm will produce excessive smoothing that removes object textures or insufficient smoothing for removing noise. This is because the energy function consisting of data term and smoothing term is uniformly evaluated. We introduce spatially varying weight of smoothing energy term for realizing “edge preserving smoothing”. We compared the images produced by proposed method with different weight functions, edge preserving smoothing, and bilateral filter, and found that proposed method with edge based weight function produces the best value of the normalized correlation with the ground truth.
