Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The feedback error learning has been proposed by Kawato et al. (1987, 1992) as a learning scheme of cerebellum in the framework of internal model hypothesis. In this cerebellar learning, the inferior olive (IO) plays a key role in transmitting the error signals at the Purkinje cells. However, the role of the inferior olive has been questionable because of its relatively low firing rate (2 Hz). Schweighofer et al. (2004) constructed a network of IO neurons based on a compartment model and found ``chaotic resonance'' phenomena, where chaotic activity induces desynchronized spikes among the neurons, which result in a highly efficient information transmission. The aim of the present study is to examine the chaotic resonance hypothesis by using a simple mathematical mu-model. Our simulation study shows that in addition to the chaotic resonance there exists an alternative regime where quasi-periodic activity of neurons enables an efficient information transfer. We show that this regime is quite robust against parameter setting as well as dynamical noise.
