A Proposal of Local Reroute Techniques for Inter-domain Routing to Improve Network Stability

(in English) BGP4 (Border Gateway Protocol version 4) is a protocol for inter-domain routing in the Internet backbone. Recently, the number of BGP control messages which flow through the network grows over half a million. Due to the message overhead, increase of routers’ processing load and instability of the network occur. One of the reasons for growth of the message is considered frequent topology changes e.g., link failures or maintenance. BGP control messages are generated in order to update the BGP routing information caused by the changes. In this paper, we propose LR-BGP(Local Reroute BGP) which can reduce message overhead in the case of link failure. With our proposed method, BGP control message traverses only along the alternative route for each destination Prefix when a link failure occurs. We evaluated performance of LR-BGP by network simulation and showed that LR-BGP can reduce the message overhead up to 80 % compared with normal BGP.
