Electromagnetic interference (EMI) from Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader/writers on implantable medical devices is investigated. The purpose of our research is to study a numerical EMI estimation method. First, four high frequency (HF) RFID reader/writer antennas and numerical antenna models are constructed. In addition, obtained data of magnetic field distributions created around the antenna by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and experimentally measured data are comparatively discussed. Next, EMI experiments are performed to obtain the maximum interference distance (distance where EMI disappears) with respect to antenna input power. Then, to validate the analysis results, the relation between the maximum interference distance (obtained by EMI experiments with an injected ECG signal) and the estimated induced voltage at the connector of the implantable cardiac pacemaker model are investigated. A numerical model of a human torso phantom and an implantable cardiac pacemaker are analyzed in order to estimate this voltage. |
