In millimeter-wave OFDM transmission, this report proposes an OFDM receiver employing decision-directed phase noise compensation (DD-PNC) to improve the performance degradation due to the phase noise. Wireless personal area network (WPAN) systems in millimeter-wave 60 GHz band are now being extensively studied, however, in the high bit-rate OFDM transceiver based on the one-chip Si RF-CMOS IC, the relatively large phase noise at the phase locked loop (PLL) synthesizer causes severe performance degradation in the higher level QAM modulation such as 64QAM. This report proposes the OFDM receiver which iterates DD-PNC and decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE) by exploiting the output of the channel decoder. In the initial process of the receiver, the conventional phase noise compensation is performed by using pilot signals inserted into each OFDM symbol. In the iterative process, the receiver estimates the phase noise at each sample by the output of the decoder and compensates for the time-domain received signal with the estimated phase noise. Moreover, DDCE estimates a channel impulse response by using the compensated received signal. DD-PNC and DDCE employ the LMS algorithm with different step-size parameters, respectively. Computer simulations are conducted so as to verify the effectiveness of the proposed receiver, and demonstrate that it can compensate the phase noise and improve the degradation of the channel estimation due to the phase noise by iterating both DD-PNC and DDCE, and that it can achieve an excellent transmission performance in the 64QAM modulation with the coding rate 3/4 under the condition that the phase noise level is -80 dBc/Hz at the 1 MHz offset. |
