Real-time object detection based on global motion estimation from MPEG motion vectors

(in English) In this paper, we report a real-time moving object detection method based on global motion estimation.
Because the global motions caused by camera movements generate non-zero MPEG motion vectors in both the background and moving objects, it is difficult to detect moving objects by using only motion vectors.
The global motion vectors can be directly estimated from motion vectors by the Newton-Raphson method, and we can calculate a local motion vector representing the absolute motion of a moving object by subtraction of the estimated global motion vector from the input motion vector.
Therefore, we can detect moving objects using the calculated local motion vectors and Iwasaki’s method even if the input motion vectors of moving objects are affected due to the global motions caused by the movements of an unfixed camera.
We show that the proposed method can detect moving objects in real-time on a laptop computer through several experiments using actual acquired MPEG videos.
