Adaptive FEC Control Considering Energy Efficiency for Wireless Sensor Networks

(in English) In wireless sensor networks (WSN), energy-efficiency is essential because sensor nodes are battery powered, and the utilization is required even in a low quality, e.g. highly noisy, communication environment. Forward Error Correction (FEC) has been recognized as an effective solution in such an environment. In cases, however, when packet errors occur due to the congestion, i.e., packet collisions, FEC is likely to degrade the performance because of overhead caused by redundancy data. This article proposes a new scheme achieving energy-efficient communication while maintaining high delivery ratio according to the change of the radio channel fluctuation by estimating the cause of packet losses and deciding use of FEC adaptively. In addition, this article shows the effectiveness of the scheme by simulation.
