Polarization evolution of backscattered lightwave in high-PMD fibers measured by phase-noise compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry

(in English) Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is now becoming the ultimate limit for system performances in optical communication systems. To replace the bad sections of a link with large PMD, distributed measurement technique is highly required. Polarization optical time domain reflectometry (P-OTDR) is an effective technique which enables us to obtain the information of backscattered states of polarization (SOP) along optical fibers, providing a method of estimating localized PMD. However, if the fiber under test has a high-PMD section, the spatial resolution of P-OTDR is insufficient in some cases. In contrast, we proposed the phase-noise compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR), which provides a high spatial resolution and a long measurement range. In this paper, we use PNC-OFDR with a polarization diversity scheme to measure the distributed information of backscattered polarization state including the phase information (Stokes parameter), which makes it possible to measure a high-PMD section.
