In the past decade, monitoring tasks have been received high attentions in many applications. To carry out such tasks, various kinds of sensor networks for monitoring have been developed in an area of interest. IEEE 802.15.4 standard is a candidate among short-range wireless communications for sensor networks because it has an advantage of low power consumption which leads to long-lived monitoring without the necessity of replacing the batteries. However, the development of the standard aims at indoor usage, i.e., networking for appliances in home or office. If we use IEEE 802.15.4 devices for outdoor monitoring, it is necessary to pay attention on link quality or power attenuation due to surrounding obstacles and complex environment. Therefore, we performed rudimentary outdoor experiments in various environments to investigate radio characteristics of IEEE 802.15.4 in this paper. |
