A study on year-to-year variation of the frequency scaling characteristics in Ka and Ku band satellite communication links

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Long-term rain attenuation statistics of the Ka and Ku band satellite signals obtained from 1986 to 2006 at Osaka Electro-Communication University in Neyagawa, Osaka, are investigated for the year-to-year variation of their frequency scaling characteristics. The ratio of Ka-band to Ku-band attenuation indicates yearly fluctuations of more than ±10% around the mean value in their equi-probability relationship, being considerably deviated from the frequency scaling models of the ITU-R predictions. A detailed study on the front types of rainfall events that have occurred for the past 19 years reveals that this deviation is primarily caused by the difference of raindrop size distribution (DSD) between the stationary fronts that give rise to the rainfall in Baiu and Shuu (Akisame) seasons, respectively, as well as the occurrence rate of summertime shower. A new frequency scaling method that estimates the Ka-band attenuation of N-Star from the Ku-band attenuation of BS at 1 min interval using one of the three representative DSDs at each event shows a large improvement of the estimation errors from the observed cumulative time percentages of the Ka-band attenuation. Also, appreciable improvements are produced by using specified DSDs in characteristics rain types or rainy seasons such as Baiu and Shuu.
