The present study attempted to support five children with High Functioning Autism (HFA) in learning effective communication, using "Pictogram Designs for Communicative Aid (JIS Pictograms)" created and distributed by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. First, we conducted a pilot experiment, in which some tasks were given to both a child with and three children without HFA. The answers given by the child with HFA remarkably differ from those given by the other children. Focusing on the difference, we devised a learning support material that would aid the child with HFA in reaching the same answers that the other children typically gave. In the second experiment, the material was tested on five children with Autism including the subject of the pilot experiment. The result was: all the children with Autism tended to make very similar or the same mistakes in the tasks but they reached the correct answers once they found some regularity in the pictogram sentences. |
