On the performance of H.264/SVC-based video streaming services with FEC recovery

(in English) In this paper, we analyze the performance of Forward Error Correction (FEC) recovery over H.264/SVC-based video streaming services. Focusing on a bottleneck edge router at the boundary between optical-backbone and access networks, we consider the impact of the variable frame size on data loss at application level. It is assumed that the number of packets in a frame is variable and that the interval of sending packets is constant on the transport layer. We model the bottleneck router as a
GI+M/M/1/K queue, a single-server queueing system with two independent
input processes: a general renewal input process for video streaming packets and a Poisson arrival process for background traffic multiplexed at the bottleneck router. We derive the data-loss ratio of main traffic. In numerical examples, we investigate how the
variability of the frame size affects the data-loss ratio. FEC
recovery performance is also studied. Numerical examples show that the
data-loss ratio is not significantly affected by the variable frame
size, and that
increasing the buffer size
is more effective than FEC for a bottleneck router in congestion.
