| (in English) | Recently, the rapid growth of Internet traffic has increased the number of IT equipments. Reducing their power consumption is important to support the growing traffic. Furthermore, the power consumption of servers and network equipments such as a router and a switch accounts for about half of the total power consumption of all IT equipments. This urges us to reduce power consumption of a data center where a number of servers and network equipments are in operation. In this paper, we propose a new eco-friendly data center operation scheme based on server virtualization. In the proposed scheme, we introduce a server to manage virtual servers and network settings. The server monitors resource utilization of virtual servers periodically. In addition, the server may change configuration of the data center dynamically based on the utilization. For example, when the utilization ratio is low, the server changes configuration so that the services could be served by fewer servers and network equipments, and turns off unnecessary servers and network equipments. We implement a system based on the proposed scheme, and evaluate the performance of proposed scheme from the viewpoint of power consumption. | |
