Improving efficiency of radio power amplifier has been an important issue for portable radio terminals since it directly affects the battery life. Class-E and F amplifiers, which control the output harmonics effectively, are typical approaches to realize high efficiency for the transmitters of constant envelope modulation. For linear (non-constant envelope) modulations, however, class-A amplifiers have to be operated with enough back-off in low efficiency. OFDM modulation is getting widely used recently, however the efficiency of the power amplifier is quite low since it requires much more back-off due to the high PAPR (peak to average power ratio). EER (envelope elimination and restoration) is a promising solution to this problem, and the authors have studied a new EER with "envelope PWM" that switches the phase modulated RF signal at the input of the final stage power amplifier by the PWM signal of the amplitude/envelope component of the modulation. In this paper, power added efficiency (PAE) is evaluated when a carrier wave signal is switched by the switching pulses of several duty ratios as the PWM signal by experiments. Experimental results show that the PAE is improved comparing to that of the class-A amplifier at the corresponding operating point to the each duty ratio. |
