An Evaluation of a Computer-Assisted Kanji Learning System in a Ubiquitous Environment

(in English) This paper describes a web-based kanji learning system and its field testing. By using the system on the Internet, any learner can easily learn kanji at anytime and in anywhere via PC, iPhone or iPod touch.
The system has three functions such as associative kanji learning, dictionary search using kanji handwriting recognition and web-dictionary search using text parsing. In the first function, one kanji in one group is displayed with English meaning, reading, no. of strokes, radical, stoke order, grade of JLPT and so on. In the function, learners repeatedly learn the kanji with associative knowledge. In a mode of checking, learners check the reading or meaning in their memory. In the function, learners also write the kanji on palm or over head by their hand. In a stage of testing, learners examine reading and meaning of kanji. Scores after the testing are useful for learners to achieve improvements.
About 16% of accesses is via iPhone or iPod touch. So the system is useful for kanji learning in the ubiquitous environment such as PCs and mobiles.
