The special retinal structure of primates implements the foveal and the peripheral vision. The foveal vision has
high spatiotemporal resolution but very narrow-angle view, while the peripheral vision has wide-angle view but has low spatiotemporal
resolution. Because of their complementary characteristics, eyes should be moved by saccades to acquire high
spatiotemporal in the wide field of view (overt attention control). In the real life, we often need to multiple objects simultaneously.
When they cannot be captured by the foveal vision simultaneously, but one needs to track them accurately and
simultaneously to achieve a goal, how overt attention is controlled? To answer this question, we present our hypothesis that
overt attention is switched from an object to another object based on the uncertainty of the estimated state of the objects. To
test the hypothesis based on eye-movement recording, we propose a novel paradigm called Racing paradigm. In this paradigm,
there are two moving objects that cannot be captured by the foveal vision simultaneously, and subjects are required to predict
which object reaches the finish line first. The targets were blinked so that we manipulate the uncertainty of the estimated
target-state. Results show that subjects attended the target whose uncertainty was artificially increased longer than the other,
suggests the plausibility of our hypothesis. |
