| (in English) | We studied the influence of phase transition in neural activities on population coding. We addressed this issue in an Ising-Spin model with Mexican-hat type interactions. In this model, network activities have three stable states, i.e., paramagnetic state, ferromagnetic state, and localized state. Which state network activities converge to depends on the strength of lateral connections and the intrinsic properties of a model neuron. The performance of population coding is measured by Fisher information, which is the estimation error for optimal readout. We found that the properties of population coding drastically changed near the phase transition points. The amount of information extracted by linear readout was dominant in paramagnetic phase and ferromagnetic phase, whereas the amount of information extracted by nonlinear readout becomes prominent in localized phase. This means that when neural activities are in localized state, it is necessary to use a nonlinear readout scheme to capture an adequate amount of information. |
