To enhance barrier-free service in a hospital for the visually impaired, we developed a Japanese-into-Braille translating program for medical texts, “meBraille”. Using this program, we made two Braille pamphlets of a hospital, for outpatients and inpatients, respectively. Before translating them into Braille, we modified the original sentences which are expressed in Chinese and/or Hiragana characters, to make it more easily readable for the visually impaired: elimination of the repetition of the same contents, polite (honorific) speech terms, and passive voice to be simple, short and to the point. Then we added medical terms to the dictionary in the program for higher translation accuracy. The two pamphlets are now open to public and accessible for all visitors in the hospital. |
