Nano-adhesion of polystyrene (PS) was studied by atomic force microscopy using a cantilever tip coated with PS. Nano-adhesion strength (GN) was evaluated as functions of time (tad) and temperature. Although GN remained a constant up to tad=103 s, it increased proportional to tad1/4 and then again reached a constant. This implies that GN is composed of two factors such as adhesion force between PS surfaces and interdiffusion of segments. The temperature dependence of GN could be expressed by a WLF-type equation, indicating that the GN value is closely related to frictional properties among neighboring chains. Thus, it can be concluded that nano-adhesion is dominated by rheological factors rather than thermodynamic ones. |
