A study on image based estimation of position and direction in urban environments using SIFT algorithm

(in English) In this paper, we propose a support system for navigation to improve estimation of users’ position and direction by image-based retrival based on SIFT algorithm. Navigation services to guide users using position data with GPS are being spread, but higher accuracy of users’ position and direction in urban environments is required.
In order to solve this problem, it is effective to match users’ images to streetscape images that were captured before and have position data. However, image matching often does not succeed because of large image intervals or poor quality. Therefore, in this study we propose a method that extract correct corresponding points from streetscape images. It chooses some corresponding points for each local feature and then select the most appropriate point from these points based on weak geometrical constraint. Experimental results show that the method improves the matching accuracy for estimating users’ position and direction.
