Graphene is a single-layer carbon-atomic honeycomb lattice crystal. Electrons and holes in graphene hold a linear dispersion relation with zero bandgap, resulting in a peculiar feature of negative-dynamic conductivity by optical pumping in the terahertz (THz) range at room temperature. Owing to this feature, we think that the population inversion and stimulated emission in graphene can be achieved. In this paper, we show the observation of coherent THz emission using an optical-pump/THz-probe technique based on the electrooptic sampling. This phenomenon is interpreted as an amplified stimulated THz emission, which will lead to a new type of THz laser. |
