Systemic Representation of Evaluation in Japanese Blog -- An application of Appraisal theory --
Motoki Sano (NINJAL) NLC2009-39
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study aims to provide a classification of evaluative expression, employing the Appraisal theory. Appraisal theory is a linguistic framework proposed from Systemic Functional linguistics. The present study, applying the framework, explored the evaluative expressions in the texts from Yahoo!Blog contained in The Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese. The expressions were analysed in terms of i) the criteria for the evaluation, ii) the targets of the evaluation and iii) the degree of explicitness. The analysis shows that the expressions can be systematically represented by employing the theory, and it can be a useful approach for identifying the writers' rhetorical strategies for expressing the evaluation.
